Say Hello to the Masochist

Can I just say that I'm in the library right now and there's a crazy girl sitting next to me who keeps laughing at what I presume is an msn conversation (but that's not what annoys me).. for the last two hours she had been typing like a maniac at superhuman speeds (so I think she's just faking it) and singing along with whatever music she's listening to (except she keeps giving us snippets and I think she thinks she's good so I don't really think I can tell her to stop).. I kinda hope she's reading this.. she keeps looking at me.. but maybe it's for approval lol.. anywhoo let's get to the music. I mostly just posted to write the above down because I genuinely feel like we're in the everlasting musical drought.. It's slowly killing me.. and If I die, Leona Lewis wins.. and that' s unacceptable. So I'll just give you some of my music that expresses how I feel right now:

Bullet in the Head - RATM
Heads will Roll - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Torture Me - Metric (sounds more emo than it really is)
Ain't Cha - Clipse Feat. Re-Up Gang
Do it or Die - Die Mannequin
Saved by Strangers - Die Mannequin (from the album "Unicorn Steak" - geez)
Kiss and Control - AFI

I think that'll do..

also I just want to mention that I love Classified's new song "Quit While You're Ahead" featuring Choclair, Maestro and Moka Only (remember Moka Only? He was in that group Swollen Members that made that really good song Breathe feat. Nelly Furtado)

... and omg you guys it's coming.. believe you me, come November 15 (Santa Claus Parade/ after which we're goin to put up our Christmas tree because my mom says we have to wait for Santa to come before we can put it up?), I'm gong to be talking about all Christmas music/things all the time until December 25th.. eek can't wait!/but I can wait until Dec 26th, the saddest day of the year (because Christmas is over.. I don't even want to think about it)... ttyl.

Beyonce vs. Beyonce

I was feeling a little blog-happy this week so I thought I'd post another.

Today, like every day since the show began, I was pining over Glee and I was marveling over the ability of this show to make me like songs that I absolutely despised.

The examples to date are Rihanna's "Take a Bow", Beyonce's "Halo", and Jordin Sparks/Chris Brown's "No Air"... these songs were.. idiotic is the best word I can come up with. Riddled with bad lyrics, stupid concepts, and a weird deliverence despite the talent of the singers, these songs just plain sucked in my opinion, but then a funny thing happened, they were put into context in the lives of beautiful, funny people who are as charming as they are awkward. But I'll save my "Why I love Glee" spiel for another blay (like how I did that? I merged the words blog and day)

I wanted to talk about Beyonce today, because I still hate single ladies (nope, not even Glee could make me love it, I guess because none of the Glee kids actually sang it)... WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU B? Work it out was Beyonce's first solo project and it really got me excited for her solo album (plus I love when she sings "Hey Goldmember"). I was a little disappointed when she sang Dangerously in Love alone on her album because it was one of my favourite songs by Destiny's Child, but I get it, since it's like the only good song she ever wrote (also "Cater to You" was the most degrading way to end such a fantastic vocal group).

When Crazy in Love came out, I thought Beyonce was unstoppable, beautiful (her abs are weird.. i like it better when she covers her stomach), and ready to smack us down with her pitch-perfect voice and incredible stage presence. And I was right, for a glorious short period of time. She released Baby Boy, which wasn't nearly as good as Crazy in Love, but I blamed that on Sean Paul, and she bounced back with Me, Myself, and I which I absolutely adored.

But then something happened to her: she just stopped being good.

I didn't like Naughty Girl because something about it just didn't do it for me, and then she released the lyrical travesty that was Check on it. But B, I still had faith. 2006 rolled around and it was the reinvention of Beyonce. I'm not even going to get into that freaky clothing line of hers (with way overdone styles and the brand logo that reminds me of the Quebec flag). She released the song Deja vu and I knew from the moment I heard Jay-Z's caveman grunts in the beginning it was going to be a disaster. I was saddened and abandoned all hope of Beyonce ever being good again, it just sucks that Crazy in Love was soooo AWESOME, because everything after it just seemed sub-par.

I did like Ring the Alarm and it did spark my faith in Beyonce again but she couldn't accept that and beat, shot and killed any support I had left for her from there on out releasing horrific trash like Irreplaceable, Beautiful Liar, If I were a Boy (Ciara did it better), Diva, Halo, and the god-foresaken Single Ladies. I'm not going to lie, that list of songs makes me nauseous and kills me a little more every time I read it over to check my spelling.

I feel like Beyonce's battered girlfriend. I keep coming back forcing myself to listen to this garbage in hopes of liking it because I know she can change, she has it in her. Thank the lord for DJs who can change her for us. Green Light was god-awful until I heard the Freemasons Remix which blew my mind. I don't know what I'd do with my life if there were no such thing as DJs..

Two songs that I do enjoy (that were released post-crazy in love) and am required to give a shoutout to but I don't like to associate with this new music-for-the-masses-because-the-masses-have-bad-taste-now-robot-Beyonce are Freakum Dress and Kitty Kat (I actually love this song).

I also want to say that she can still sing and her Ave Maria tribute to MJ was very beautiful, and sometimes, just sometimes, I believe that the old Beyonce still lives.

I didn't really want to get into Beyonce's creepy alter-ego business (It was only cool when Janet did it - i.e. Damita Jo), but my sister says Beyonce's alter-ego Sasha Fierce is an excuse to make bad music, because she knows most of it is bad. Truer words have never been spoken.

What NOT to listen to...

Hey loverberries, it's been a while. I thought I'd blog for my four friends who read this, Bianca, Tharsha, Tim, and You. Ok so today, I'm not feeling particularly happy, in fact it feels like a particular part of my brain is going to explode. That's what anger feels like for me (seeing as how only 1/4 (i.e. Tharsha) of you know what I'm like when I'm angry). Ok so I'm going to cut to the chase.

First: Music for when you're angry:
My go-to songs are:
AFI's "Death of the Season"
Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name of"
I have a pretty short fuse but I usually calm down after these two. If I haven't calmed down yet, then I listen to T.I.'s "Hurt" feat. Alphamega and Busta Rhymes. If I still haven't calmed down then I've moved on to the emotion of sadness or I will go to sleep.

Some other good angry bands are any screamo like Underoath/Hawthorn Heights/Alexisonfire, but if it's all screaming and you can't sing along, no anger is relieved.
Also angry chick rock like The Cliks' "Dirty King" (actually I love listening to this song when I'm happy too - it's soo good) and even some Paramore (old paramore before Riot.. after Riot is all gumdrops and warm feelings - I love their new stuff more than their old TBH)

Now, the "what not to listen to" segment of our broadcast.
Sometimes when you're angry, or happy, or lonely, there are songs that you hear that just make your situation worse.
Here are some examples:
-Let's start with angry, I hate hearing happy love songs when I'm angry, such as Craig David's "Key to My Heart"
-When I'm lonely "Why Just Be Friends" makes me feel like I'll die alone (lol)
-When I'm happy "Mad World" is a total killjoy
-When I'm sad I hate listening to any bubbly pop like "Party in the USA" (surprisingly great song)
-When I'm feeling old (lol) I hate listening to songs on the radio (because old people always hate the songs on the radio, that's the truth.)
-When I'm nervous about something.. pretty much every song makes me more nervous, that's why I'd rather sit in silence or listen to Daft Punk's "Technologic" (only song that can calm me down)

Lemme just say that (except for when I'm nervous) Dance music is the only kind that always makes me feel good. Just get some David Guetta, Fedde Le Grand, or Deadmau5 up in there maybe some Guru Josh Project, "Infinity 2008", or even kick it back oldschool to some Delerium or even older to Haddaway, Love Inc., or Livin' Joy and everything will be alright.

p.s. Please keep in mind these are all my favourite songs (minus the stuff on the radio).. I just hate them sometimes.

Some awesome songs that need a shoutout:
"Starstrukk" - 3oh!3 feat. Katty Perry
"Memories" - David Guetta feat. Kid Cudi
"Missing You" - David Guetta feat. Novel
"Cocktail Queen" - Deadmau5 feat. Melleefresh
"Ghosts 'n Stuff" - Deadmau5 feat. Rob Swire
"Flat on the Floor" - Carrie Underwood
"Off That" Jay-Z feat. Drake (even though I hate Jay-Z with his stupid "you know why they call a project a project? because it's a project" lyric/ also Empire State of Mind SUCKS - it's so bad, even though I love Alicia Keys)

ALL MUSIC FROM GLEE - best show ever*.

*After Avatar: The Last Airbender, Veronica Mars, and season 1 of Heroes

Astronomy Blog

This blog is dedicated to Bianca. The Search for Life in the Universe is pointless because even if life were there, I'm sure it could outsmart our slow technology and hence never be discovered. Nice try Southam, nice try. Also the girl in front of me keeps turning around and watching me, it's creepy. Fingers crossed me and B get casted for If You Seek Amy's sexy bodied party people, and natives in New Moon. Today's song of the day is... the "best remix ever" of Womanizer. Injected with a Poison, Over.

why thank ye, kind sir.

Awesome tunes from commercials. The advertising powers that be, wrapped up in their tomfoolery and gimmicks and have struck a musical goldmine to win over the young public/ hit home with their target audience. I have found quite a few perfect songs from commercials and here they are:

-Coffee Shop by Landon Pig in A Diamond is Forever commercial
-You're a Wolf by Sea Wolf in a Chevy Malibu commercial
-Creator by Santogold in a budlight lime commercial
-Daydreamin by Lupe Fiasco ft. Jill Scott in and AT&T cell phone commercial
-Rollercoaster by Major Maker in a Maynards commercial (I remember being obsessed with this commercial song and I wanted it so I was really sad when I found out they made the song just for the commercial but due to the excitement about the song they hastily made it into a full-length song that is nowhere near as awesome, at least i'll always have the commercial)
-Remind Me by Royksopp in a geico commercial
-The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car by Troopers in a Tim Horton's Timbit commercial
-Around the Bend by Asteroid Galaxy Tour in a recent itouch commercial/ I love the video for this song! (+ all the other awesome songs that itunes has popularized, CSS' Music is my hot hot sex, Viva la vida, Jerk it out, Flathead, Vertigo, 1 2 3 4, Shut up and let me go -another awesome video, Mis Swing Es Tropical, Passion Pit's Sleepyhead - absolutely awesome)
-Sweet Pea by Amos Lee from an AT&T commercial
-Song 2 by Blur in a really old Budweiser commercial on an airplane (I can't remember the other details)
-That theme song for People's Diamonds where the shadows give each other diamonds
-Breathe by Telepopmusik from a Visa commercial
-Handlebars by Flobots (I saw some commercial in the states, possibly an MTV commercial, but a commercial nonetheless)

Well kids, that's all the commercial tunes I can remember but I must also mention the song White Lies by E.S.T. (Thank you gg, despite how boring your show is when Nate's not on).

happy new year!

2009 is going to be sizzling hot if for no other reason than the release of some bodacious movies and psychedelic cds. OOOOOOmg I can't wait.. I'm going to start posting movies I'm going to watch each month too because with great movies often come smexcellent songs. Like Shipping Up to Boston (thank you Departed), Are you that Somebody (domo arigato Dr. Doolittle), Dance Like This (merci Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights), Bad Things (ok.. this is from True Blood the t.v. series but still an excellent song), and many many more (like all those dance movies - I personally think Step Up had an excellent soundtrack since I liked every song from it).

Anywhoo this new year is ripe with disgustingly exciting CD releases. Ok so 2008 kinda raised our standards in music releases (what with B.Spears' new cd, lil Wayne, Kanye and GNR's friggin long awaited Chinese Democracy and all).

What I'm excited for:
-Billy Talent (WOOT)-Dave Matthews Band (horraah)
-K-os (sooo excited)
-Dr. Dre (so excited I might vomit)
-Eminem (I think I'm going to cry)
What I'm curious to hear but don't expect to like more than three tracks on it:
-U2 in their 12th studio album release after more than 4 years (I'm not that excited)
-Coldplay (meh: but I do love Violet Hill and Lost! from their last album)
-Jay Z - The Blueprint 3 (waaay overrated - I mean who fakes a retirement?; however I do like his pre-retirement music and one post: Heart of the City - but only because my sister keeps singing the chorus which made me realize how catchy it was)

What I don't care about but will probably give a quick listen-through:
-Greenday (boo - although I do like Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams)
-Fiddy (50-cent/eww except I like ayo technology and a couple of songs featuring him like Can't Leave him alone, etc.)
-Postal Service
-Built to Spill

Who I'm angry at (this has nothing to do with 2009 releases):
-Leona Lewis (for wasting my time and hurting my ears)
-Rihanna (for being the laziest musician in the history of time - she's not the only one with more than one good track on her CD but releasing a 9th single from the same cd? seriously? you make me mad rihanna you and your creepy neck tatoo; if the video for disturbia wasn't so awesome i would probably dislike you as much as I do leona (that's saying something). Stop being lazy and make some new music or go away. Thank you.
